Social media makes everybody a better storyteller, right? That’s the theory, all right.

Indeed, social media is an incredible force for sharing ideas, shifting perceptions, breaking down walls, and transforming the world. Yet while we have 1,001 platforms for sharing our story now, the signal to noise ratio is completely out of hand. You don’t need a superhero to tell you, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Skip the douche, and go for substance.

Lets put it this way: social media is relationship technology, and storytelling is all about relationships. So does that connect the dots? If you want to be sharing and creating something meaningful for yourself and others, you better understand the dynamics of narrative.

Part of the trouble is that social media is an emergent vocabulary – a new language, and with it an evolving culture of habits, rituals, icons, tool sets, and structures. The landscape is ever evolving, morphing, and without a centralized mothership. Social media is about making sense of the world, by bringing people into yours. If you want to go from social media tourist to true digital native, you need to learn the vocab . And of course storytelling is a core principle at the heart of the whole conversation and relationship equation.

Thankfully, we have people like Brian Solis, a leading voice in the world of social media, who blogs profusely, and brings the mind of a pop anthropologist to teaching us all how it all works. Reading Brian’s blog is one of my favorite exercises in lateral thinking, sometimes, even better than my daily dose of chocolate.

Some exciting news?
